Zwickel 5.2% ABV
Kellerbier / Zwickelbier
Urban Chestnut Brewing Company
“What exactly is a Zwickelbier?” you may be asking yourself, I certainly did. Well Urban Chestnut does a great job of defining it right on the bottle label and their website, “Our flagship lager, pronounced ‘tzv-ick-el’, is an unfiltered, unpasteurized German classic that finishes as a smooth-drinking, vitamin rich (from the yeast), naturally cloudy bier.” Now that is refreshing, a beer that is also a vitamin drink. The only info that Urban Chestnut left out was that this beer style dates back to the Middle ages and is also referred to as a Kellerbier which translates to “cellar beer”1. German brewers would “lager” this beer in deep vaults or even “caves” in the medieval period2.
Urban Chestnut Brewing Company produces two different series of beers. The Revolution Series brews are their “contribution to the renaissance of craft beer–brewing artisanal, modern American beers.” The Fantasyland Midwest Coast IPA is an example of this Series.
The Reverence Series brews are their “celebration of beer’s heritage—brewing classically-crafted, timeless European beer styles. The Zwickel is the epitome of this Series, given that it is also known as Reverence Series #1.
The Zwickelbier style is the origin of our modern American light lagers, though packed with much more flavor. The beer has decent head retention. It is “smooth” as advertised as well as being light and crisp. It’s incredibly refreshing. Sadly this is the last of my 4 pack. I had to make sure to review this one before my will to resist drinking it, failed me.
I am becoming more and more impressed by Urban Chestnut, with every beer of theirs that I try. My only complaint is that they don’t distribute to Springfield, Il, yet. Until then, I will be forced to make the 3 hour round trip drive to the greater St. Louis area to purchase their beers. I’ll also have to make it to one of their two brewery locations in the near future. Damn you Urban Chestnut for making beers this good.
