Mama’s Little Yella Pils 5.3% ABV
Oskar Blues Brewery
A man arrives, bearing gifts. He has returned from a journey west, a trip to the Rocky Mountains. The gift he bestows upon us “unworthies,” is quite a treat indeed. He has come back with a dozen of Mama’s Little Yella Pils. He returned with a 12 pack specifically to hand them out to us, so that we could all enjoy this brew that isn’t sold within 200 miles of these parts.
While the others were thrilled, I cracked mine open and tipped it back not expecting much. I am a self proclaimed beer connoisseur; surely this humble Czech Pilsner would not draw strong praise from my nuanced palate. How wrong I was.
As I’ve said time and time again and am sure to say many times going forward, the joy of trying out the multitude of brews the world has to offer is for moments like this, the unexpected joy that a good novel beer produces.
The first time I tried out this beer was last week, straight from the can. I’m drinking another one now as I type, this time from a pilsner glass. Not shockingly, it is even better from a glass, and especially from the most appropriate glass. I had to up my rating on Untappd of this brew from 3.0 to 3.5, as the glass made that much of a difference.
The Saaz hops used give it a nice flavorful front, which flows into a smooth and easy body and then finishes clean and crisp, producing a strong desire for the following sip, or gulp. I now understand the recently clamoring I’ve heard for this beer in the Illinois region.
Oskar Blues Brewery, started out ten years ago as a brew-pub in Colorado and has now expanded, adding a 2nd brewery in North Carolina. They are proud to have started the “Craft-Beer-In-A-Can Craze.” Stating that “cans keep beer fresher, longer by eliminating the damaging effects of light and ingressed oxygen…” For those who are not fortunate enough to live in an area where this beer is readily available buy some when you are, or bribe a friend who may be traveling to such an area. The bribe will be well worth it. Better yet, become a hero to your group of friends if you happen to be the one traveling through said area, and bring back a 12 pack or two.
