Früli Strawberry Beer 4.1% ABV
(Editor’s Note: I apologize for the lack of reviews as of late. I was fighting off a seemingly intractable stomach flu that prevented me from drinking beer, let alone reviewing any, for the past 10 days. Not to fear, my immune system finally beat back the viscous virus and I am able to drink freely and resume reviewing.)
Upon opening the bottle and pouring the Früli into a glass I could already smell the alluring strawberry aroma. I take my first draught. I can see why this is such a popular beverage. It tastes more of strawberry juice than beer. In fact it tastes more like strawberry punch. The beer gives the strawberry juice effervescences, while the strawberry juice overpowers any beer flavor. You can’t even tell there is an alcohol in the brew, even though it is almost equal in alcohol content to a Bud Light.
Now this is a beer to offer non-beer drinkers. I continued to be shocked at the sweetness and incredible lack of beer flavor, or any way to discern that there is alcohol in the beverage. Though it would be a cruel and expensive prank, you could easily get a non-drinker to consume this beverage buy pouring it into a glass and claiming that it’s strawberry soda.
It costs $3.99 a bottle here in Illinois and I know of people who have bought entire cases (24 beers in a case) of this at a time. This beer is almost too sweet, for me. It’s definitely not a beer I could have more than one of, in a sitting. I would consider this a dessert beer. It would go great after a satisfying meal, in lieu of cake or pie.
Considering the price and the sweetness level, I’m not sure I’ll be buying one of these anytime soon. I’m very glad I’ve tried it and I would definitely recommend it as a starter craft brew to try.
Only a handful of special thanks left to give to my sister and brother-in-law, after this beer. I’m still making my way through the dozen beers they bought me for my birthday. Thanks!
