Shiner Week – Day 4

It is night, pitch black, not the tiniest sliver of the moon is present.  I’m somewhere in Bohemia.  The streets are all but vacant; I see a faint light spilling out of what I assume to be a tavern.  I step inside, saddle up to the bar and ask for a dark complex beer, with local character.  The barkeep looks at me up and down with aged eyes, snorts to himself and fills up a pint glass from the tap.  Slamming the glass down in front of me, he says in a direct non jovial manner “Drink.”  There is no threat, nor imploring, just a simple order.  I grasp the glass.  I can feel some of the beer that had spilled over when he slammed it down.  I take the glass to my lips, pause for a moment as I look him straight in the eyes and then take a gulp.  The brew washes across my tongue and down my throat.  My pupils dilate slightly and a smile widens across my face.  “Thank you, sir.  Please pour me another as I’ll be done with this one soon.”

The Shiner Black Lager, know in Germany as a Schwarzbier or “black beer” was first introduced as Shiner 97 and due to popular demand has made it into the regular rotation.  You can find this beer in its own 6 or 12 packs.  The malt taste and the black hue remind me of a stout, while the finish is all lager.  The stronger character makes it a bit more filling then the rest of the beers I’ve reviewed this week.  If you are a fan of a dark beer with depth to it, give this one a try.

The Shiner Family Reunion 6 pack is now 3 for 4 and continues its streak of surpassing enjoyment from one beer to the next.  Tomorrow, I review the gold standard of the Spoetzl Brewery.  Not to give too much away but the use of the word “homerun” seems appropriate.

  1. Caught up with this one today. I remember when I first had it years and years ago, it wasn’t for me. After time to appreciate finer things in life, I misjudged this one way back when.

I can see why they upgraded this to regular rotation after being an annual anniversary beer. Nice job by our friends in Shiner.
