When poured into a glass it has the dark black color of a perfect cup of coffee.  The nose has a very pleasing coffee aroma.  The front of the beer has a nice stout taste which flows into coffee flavor.  The aftertaste really brings the full coffee taste to one’s palate.  To get the true coffee flavor into this brew, Schlafly uses “a unique cold toddy extraction process to brew a less acidic coffee for the beer.”  This process must be how the beer can be so smooth and yet still have such a strong coffee flavor.  The use of real coffee in the brewing also means that every bottle has the equivalent amount of caffeine as a full cup of coffee.  So for those out there that have caffeine sensitivity this is not an ideal night cap.  On the other hand, for those who can drink coffee all night long this is a perfect brew.

This is a great beer to have after you get off of an arduous day’s work and you have some fun plans for the night.  You can relax with a beer knowing that it will keep you up for your evening activities.  I recommend against having more than two in one sitting as you start entering the beer version of red bull and vodka.  This is another in a long line of beers that is best enjoyed poured into a glass.  You miss out on the aroma and the full flavor of this brew if you drink it straight from the bottle, as I did with one from the 6 pack that I bought.

The origin of this beer comes from the 1990’s when staff members of Kaldi’s Coffee, a local St. Louis coffee shop, started visiting the Schlalfy Tap room.  They would ask for a pint of stout and a shot of espresso.  Schlafly’s and Kaldi’s thought why not combine the two, and now we all get to enjoy this delicious concoction.  Whether it’s pumpkin or coffee, Schlafly knows how to put interesting tasty flavors into a beer.
